The Telecom sector has undergone profound changes in recent years, which have affected not only Brazil but the whole world. The first is the change of the primary feature of the telecommunications service that is no longer considered as the basic infrastructure to be considered a business. This concept of change had a strong impact on the economy and society, with a large number of new companies launching the business, transforming the telecommunications sector in an important sector of the global economy. The second change was the speed of technological advance, certainly motivated by commercial opportunities, and the wide acceptance of these advances by the company.

The wireless technology, for example, has advanced at a rate that was very difficult to predict even five years ago.

The development of new products in its most dependent of new techniques concerning the physical layers as coding, modulation and processing of information, and distributed software development and systems, implemented on networks with IP protocols, has also occurred at speeds previously unimaginable.

In line with its prominent and pioneering national engineering and constant interaction with the Brazilian industry, COPPE is implementing masters and doctoral courses in the area of Telecommunications. These courses are designed to train human resources to the national engineering part of the technological advances in this sector and also conduct research whose results have an impact at international level.

A feature that differentiates the COPPE Telecommunications courses is the integration of technological component with the business side, striking feature of the new telecommunications industry.

In short, students enrolled in this area will be participating in an extremely modern program and with the usual high quality COPPE.

Infrastructure

Students can make use of the common use of facilities at COPPE, the Technology Center Library and the facilities of the three programs involved in the administration of this interdisciplinary area, Electrical Engineering Program, Systems Engineering Program and Production Engineering Program . Between laboratories available in these programs can be cited the High Speed Network laboratories, Computers and Signal Processing, Speech and Images. The courses offer their students cabinets for their research and IT infrastructure, with the use of computers and high performance processing.
